Smart Mine — Machines

High availability. Lower cost. Proven performance.

Our underground mining equipment is precision-engineered around what actually moves the needle: availability, simplicity and production output. Locally manufactured, fast parts availability, and operators kept out of the danger zone.

The challenge

Why traditional OEM models fall short

The dominant OEM model — high-specification, high-cost, OEM-dependent — was not designed around operational simplicity. For mines prioritising uptime and cost control, this creates a structural disadvantage that compounds over the equipment lifecycle.

The mine absorbs the risk

High capital cost, complex systems requiring specialised skills, and heavy structural dependency on OEM support networks — in cost, in complexity, and in availability.

Parts and service bottlenecks

Extended international supply chains and long lead times for critical components create operational bottlenecks and fleet-wide unplanned downtime.

Elevated total cost of ownership

Expensive proprietary parts, specialised servicing and lifecycle maintenance costs with limited local recourse — reducing productivity and slowing advance rates.

“Our equipment approach removes complexity from the equation and keeps your operations running — consistently and cost-effectively. This is an operational solution, not just equipment supply.”The equipment approach
The solution

A precision-engineered underground range

Safe, accurate and effective machines across trackless, rail-bound and in-stope applications — every design choice made to maximise production performance, not technical complexity.

◆

Trackless equipment

Electric & diesel low-profile double-boom drill rigs (E-SQTD-LP, SQTD-LP, SQTD Big Rig), the 4–6 t Mini Dumper, and the S-Kid skid steer mini loader.

◆

Zero-emission electric rigs

The E-SQTD-LP electric rig with onboard compressor delivers zero underground emissions, minimal noise and heat, and a 4-hour recharge — smarter, cleaner, stronger.

◆

Rail-bound equipment

The SQL Safe Quality Loader (80 t/h conveyor capacity, operator 3 m+ from the face) and SQD drill rigs in pneumatic, compressor and hydraulic configurations.

◆

In-stope & on-reef

The Vibes 300 rock drill and VTL vertical thrust leg system — accurate, mechanically stabilised drilling with the operator removed from the danger area.

◆

Specialised development

The Dropraise Spyder rig and the remotely controlled Mole raise-development rig — drilling all holes from one safe position.

◆

Equipment + maintenance + data

Value comes from using equipment, maintenance, data and optimisation together — maintenance is managed as an integrated part of the solution.

The equipment range

Precision-engineered to be safe, accurate and effective — locally manufactured, rapidly supported.

Safety by design

Every machine keeps the operator out of the danger zone

Certified protection

ROPS & FOPS certified canopies and SANS 1589-approved braking systems across the range — the operator stays in a safe zone even in poor ground conditions.

Standoff operation

SQD operators work 6 m+ from the face under protective canopies; the VTL is remotely controlled from up to 3 m; the Mole keeps operators under supported roof at all times.

Reduced regulatory exposure

Mechanically stabilised, accurate drilling and safer working positions directly reduce the incidents that trigger costly Section 54 stoppages.

Value projection

The value projection

The value proposition is structural: local manufacture and service, fast parts availability, higher fleet availability, safer operation, and better productivity through simpler, more reliable equipment.

↑Fleet availabilitySimple, robust engineering + parts lead times measured in days, not months — locally manufactured in South Africa
↓Total cost of ownershipAccessible, cost-effective parts and integrated maintenance vs. proprietary OEM lifecycles
2×Boom productivityDouble-boom rigs maximise daily advances — drilling up to 6–7 m wide sections from one setup

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What makes Talonite's underground machines different from major OEM equipment?

They are precision-engineered for availability first: simple, robust designs with fewer components to fail, locally manufactured with fast parts availability. The result is higher uptime and a lower total cost of ownership than complexity-heavy alternatives.

What types of underground equipment are available?

A focused range built for narrow-reef and hard-rock mining — including drill rigs, dump trucks and utility vehicles — engineered for availability, simplicity and output in demanding underground conditions.

How does local manufacturing benefit a mining operation?

Parts are available quickly and support is close to the operation, so machines spend less time waiting on spares and specialists. That directly protects availability — the biggest driver of underground productivity and cost per tonne.
